A federal judge ruled Thursday that more than a year of Viagra would be available for sale by the Mexican version of the drug, but would be available only in a private room at a Mexican health resort.
The case was one of many that could be dismissed after being rejected twice by the Federal Bureau of Investigation. That agency is investigating if the pills were fake or expired.
Viagra is the brand name for the erectile dysfunction drug used to treat impotence in men. It is used in the United States for several reasons:

“These pills have the potential to be very harmful,” said John C. McAdams, the executive director of the FDA’s Office of Criminal Investigations. “The FDA is required to conduct a complete review of the drugs in question before they become available for sale.”
But a spokeswoman for the FDA declined to comment. She said it is uncertain whether Viagra would be available to patients in a private room at a Mexican drugstore, but that it would be a good idea for them to buy it in a public space.
The pill is manufactured by Eli Lilly, a pharmaceutical company that makes Viagra.
A few other companies are also developing similar drugs, but Lilly has been reluctant to comment on the case.
McAdams’ firm, Pfizer, said the FDA’s review of the drugs is continuing and is reviewing it.
“We are committed to making sure that all of our investigations are done,” said McAdams, who represents clients in the pharmaceutical industry. “We will continue to work with our investigators to identify and investigate these companies, and we will work with our partners, as well as FDA, to make sure these drugs are safe and effective.”
Viagra is still in effect in the United States, but the pill is being sold by a different company, known as Lilly, which is part of a joint effort between Eli Lilly and Pfizer, the two companies that sell the pills.
Pfizer and Lilly have been trying to get people to buy the pills for about two years now. Pfizer was previously told by the FDA that the pills should be sold to men who have problems with erectile dysfunction.
The Food and Drug Administration approved Viagra in 1998.
The drug is manufactured by Pfizer Inc., a company that makes the pill.
Pfizer also makes the pills for other companies, including Eli Lilly and Co. and Bayer AG.
Both companies sell the pills in the United States.

Objective:To compare the efficacy and safety of oral and topical formulations of sildenafil and tadalafil in improving erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction.
Materials and Methods:The primary study was a randomised double-blind controlled trial of the oral and topical sildenafil and tadalafil in men with erectile dysfunction.
Results:In this study, men with erectile dysfunction who received sildenafil and tadalafil had significantly better erectile function than men who received sildenafil and tadalafil for the first four weeks (4-week treatment group, 6% difference, 95% confidence interval [CI], -1.4 to 1.0) (p<0.001). There were no significant differences between the two treatment groups at the 4-week treatment period. There was no difference in the adverse events between treatment groups, although the rate of adverse events was significantly lower in the tadalafil group. The incidence of adverse events was lower in the tadalafil group, but was significantly higher in the sildenafil group than in the placebo group.
Conclusion:The efficacy and safety of oral and topical sildenafil and tadalafil in improving erectile function in men with erectile dysfunction are satisfactory.
